Poker Camaraderie

In one of my first posts I referred to you all as “happy, shiny poker people.” I’d like to put some emphasis on that. Don’t be “grumpy, narcissistic poker curmudgeons.” Firstly, people won’t want to play with you; secondly, the phrase doesn’t roll of the tongue.

I’ve played against my share of rude and obscene opponents, and there is no call for it. In the digital arena,  they hide behind their avatar, saying things they would never utter in person. After all, no one gets their butts kicked in an on-line flame war, but I think this is a symptom of a larger problem.

Poker isn’t perceived as a fair game, even when there is no cheating. The poker gods giveth and taketh away on the river far too often. If you can’t come to terms with that, you shouldn’t play. “He who curses out the chaser doesn’t put the chaser on tilt, he puts himself on tilt.     I’m with you on this! I get tired of the “out of the blue” insult that is obviously only intended to try and take me out of my game. I mean I don’t even have to river someone. :) It doesn’t work of course, half the time I don’t even reply which probably leaves them scratching their head feeling like an idiot. If I reply it’s usually just to point out how childish and foolish they look, sometimes not in those exact terms. :)

    Well it looks like my original post is lost in the blogosphere. Basically I was agreeing with your post. I don’t even have to give someone a bad beat to get insulted. I think they are just trying to get people off their game. Doesn’t work with me and they look like a fool. Most of the time I don’t reply, sometimes I point out just how stupid they look. You’re right, I don’t think they’d act like that in real life, but then again they may just be a-holes and can’t help it.
